A day in the fog.

Penny

It was an extremely cold morning and there was a heavy fog in the air. Penny was excited as she generally is on these car rides. She was especially anxious because the fog was causing traffic delays. Cars were moving cautiously and slowly as we crawled on our route to the park. She yawned, fidgeted, and squealed a bit and bounced from one side of the car to the other. When we arrived at the parking area some twenty minutes later, there was only one other car in the lot. The fog was so thick you couldn't see more than three feet in any direction. We could only hear the rush of the water in the stream that runs adjacent to the lot and the air immediately brought moisture to our skin. It was incredibly exhilarating and Penny felt the urge to explore. As we climbed the hill, we looked back at the car that we knew we had stationed and yet we couldn't see a thing - we were in a cloud. At the top of the hill we started our usual walk along the path, we were still amazed at the lack of visibility. We traveled in a bubble of clarity while surrounded by the softened mist. Penny stayed close and checked on me every few minutes - she was soaked as she ran through the dew drenched grasses. In this fog laden environment, I realized that I could see so much that I had not seen during our previous walks. The spider webs wore the shiniest of diamonds draped around their webs. Deafened by the mist, the usual car noises were muffled to a soft whirring sound and all around us was a misty beauty. It felt ethereal to be enveloped in a three foot circle where we could see each other, while outside of that circle we were lost to each other. But the feeling was of quiet and peace and we were at all times connected. Penny was smiling and the look on her face was that of joy. It was then I realized that joy is momentary and fleeting and yet so beautiful - what a privilege it was to be surrounded by this heavenly mist. Penny's expression was that of happiness without concerns. And my thoughts were those of happiness. We were seeing things we missed on most walks; we were feeling things that elevated us and lightened our hearts and all the time we were sharing it.
